Web Site Analytics Terminology

As a webmaster, its not limited just to design a website, made live and dumped. The responsibility comes to track the site performance based on various factors. Such factors can be achieved by using paid or free analytics tools such as Google Analytics, AWStats, etc.
The following are the common terms which carries specific meaning on the basis of which one can update or modify the site to achieve the final goal.

Traffic
Traffic is a report regarding the number of people visiting a website and total number of pages viewed by them in a given time frame.

Visitors
Visitors mean the number of people visiting a site. A person can browse through many pages at a time but it only counts as a single visit.

New Visitors
It is different from visitors in the sense that it only considers absolutely new visitors. A visitor may revisit a site after a couple of days. In such case, s/he is not considered as a new visitor.

Top pages
This shows the most popular pages in terms of number of times they have have been viewed.

Page Views
Page Views reflects the total number of pages viewed during a period. It is the summation of pages viewed by each visitor per session.

Referrers
This shows the sites referring visitors to the website being tracked. It also shows the share of most important referrers.

Navigation Path
It displays navigational data for each page in a tabular form. The data shows to which pages visitors are going to from a particular page. It also gives information about how many visitors are moving from a page to another page.

Entry Pages
Entry pages are those pages through which a visitor enters a website for the first time. The report lists all the entry pages and represents the shares of most important ones.

Exit Pages
It includes those pages from which visitors are leaving the tracked web site. The also shows the pages from which most visitors are exiting the site.

Time spent on pages
This shows the amount of time people are spending on a page on average.

Time spent on site
This shows the amount of time people are spending on your site on average.

Latest Page Views
It is similar to Page Views reports and only differs on time frame.

Repeat Visitors
Displays the number of visitors who have previously visited the site and are making their revisits.

Countries
The report shows the number of visitors classified on the basis of country they are browsing from.

Search Engine
Search Engines can be a major referring source for a site as people can find the site in search engines and visit from the result pages.

Search Terms
People can find your site in search engines using various keywords and phrases. This lists all such keywords and phrases and the times people have used a particular term to find your site in search engines.

Search Terms by engines
It is aggregation of above two reports. This report makes it easier by classifying the keywords based on the search engine they are related to.

Browsers
Shows the browsers (such as Internet Explorer and firefox) that people are using to view your web site.

Browser Versions
Same browser can have various versions. This classifies the browsers the visitors are using in terms of their version and also presents the number of visitors using them.

Platforms
Platform means the environment of in which visitors are browsing. It can be *NIX, Windows, Mac or any other.

Operating System
The platforms can be classified based on the various versions of operating systems. For Windows it can be Windows 98 or XP or 200. This gives a classified figure of such data.

Screen Resolution
Resolution of screen effects the way your site is displayed to the visitor. It classifies the visitors on the basis of the resolution of the screen they are using (Ex � 800X600, 1024X768).

Script Version
The shows the version of JavaScript that is supported in the machine of the visitor.

Java Support
Some sites make use of Java for adding features to their sites. But all machines may not support Java. This shows what percentage of visitor�s machine supports Java and what percentage does not.

Cookie Support
Browsers may or may not support cookie based on the security and privacy settings of the users. Cookie Support shows the percentage of visitors allowing cookies in their settings.
